The NuHealth Foundation Annual Heroes Gala will be held on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:00pm at the beautiful Oheka Castle in Huntington, NY.

The “2011 Heroes in Health Gala” will celebrate the staff, patients and recent accomplishments throughout the NuHealth System.

Deidra Parrish Williams, NuHealth Foundation’s executive director says, “it is important for us to celebrate our accomplishments and introduce more Long Islanders to the vital role that NuHealth plays. Our gala gives us that opportunity.”

The NuHealth System includes Nassau University Medical Center(NUMC), A. Holly Patterson Extended Care, and a network of Family Health Centers.  In the last couple of months, NuHealth opened a sophisticated new Emergency Department, arguably the most advanced on Long Island.  A new state of the art amphitheatre was unveiled, providing residents a modern, well-appointed space for ongoing training.

The Bariatric Department at NUMC earned Center of Excellence status and three of NuHealth’s family HealthCenters received the highest designation possible for their standards of care.  Additionally, modernization efforts have breathed new life throughout the campus.

“The NuHealth System’s impact on the Long Island region is immense, from economic development to health care. We are working to get more people and businesses supporting its future,” said chairman of  NuHealth Foundation’s Board of Directors, Paul Tonna.

The NuHealth Foundation was part of NuHealth System CEO/President Arthur Gianelli’s vision to ensure that NuHealth is well positioned to provide its patients, including the region’s most vulnerable populations, the best care possible. He said, “more and more, philanthropy is a key component for any viable health care institution. The patients we serve deserve the support of this community.”

According to a recent press release on NuHealth.net, 3 out of 4 NuHealth System Family Health Centers received the highest designation of Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Homes. Level 3 is the highest designation under guidelines by the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the NYS Department of Helath.
NuHealth’s Family Health Centers in Roosevelt, Elmont and NewCassel received the designation, and the fourth location in Hempstead is expected to receive Level 3 in the near future. Currently, Hempstead is a Level 2 Patient Centered Medical Homes.
A Patient Centered Medical Home is defined as “a model of care where each patient has an ongoing relationship with a personal physician who leads a team that takes collective responsibility for patient care,” (NuHealth.net). The AHRQ defines a medical home as “not simply a place but a model of primary care that delivers care that is: patient centered, comprehensive, coordinated, accessible and continuously improved through a systems based approach to quality and safety,” (NuHealth.net). This is  a distinguished honor for NuHelath System to receive.
President/CEO of NuHealth System, Arthur Gianelli, announced, “this is extremely good news and it was obtained far earlier than anticipated. It is very impressive how far the family health centers have been transformed under the leadership of health centers medical director, Laurie Ward, MD… Congratulations to those involved, especially Dr. Ward, Lee Raifman and Art Cusack for the success of this important endeavor. This Level 3 designation is a solid acknowledgement of your strong and dedicated leadership and a testament to your commitment to high quality care for our health centers’ patients.”
NuHealth System is always improving their already extraordinary care practices. For more information on NuHealth System, or to schedule an appointment at one of the Family Health Centers, visit www.NuHealth.net.

A recent study has found a link between liposuction and cardiovascular disease.

Triglycerides, the fats found in the blood, have been linked in studies to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Now liposuction is found to reduce these levels of fats, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to an article published by MSNBC, within three months of liposuction, patients’ triglyceride levels had dropped “an average of 43%, according to a report presented today at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Denver.”

The study looked at 322 consecutive patients, 270 women and 52 men, who had liposuction surgery or a tummy tuck. 78% of the patients’ were in the “normal to overweight range,” which is why the study came as a shock to most.

The study also showed a decrease in the numbers of white blood cells circulating in the blood, suggesting that the removal of fat is reducing inflammation, which is also “thought to be involved in the development of cardiovascular disease, “(MSNBC).

NuHealth recently opened its Heart Failure Center to keep patients healthy and out of the hospital. Their goal is to help patients who have suffered heart failure learn self-care behaviors and promote heart failure management skills so they can feel better, live longer and avoid readmission to the hospital.

According to the NuHealth Heart Failure article, more than 5 million Americans have been diagnosed with heart failure. It is the most common reason for hospitalization among patients over age 65. Luckily, cardiac events have become more and more survivable thanks to the advances in emergency and cardiovascular medicine.

The NuHealth Heart Failure Center creates an individualized plan for each patient, often making changed to their diet, medications and devices, self-care skills such as stress reduction and a personal exercise program to help maximize the patients overall well-being.

The nurses in the Heart Failure Center monitor each patient’s program with care and essence, tracking the progress and providing ongoing assessment, education and help with lifestyle modification as well as emotional support.

Nassau University Medical Center has released groundbreaking news in a Press Release posted Wednesday, September 14th

NUMC has been designated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and by the Surgical Review Corporation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. This designation is bestowed up bariatric surgery centers that “have met rigorous criteria for the performance of safe bariatric surgical procedures and have demonstrated short and long term results after bariatric surgery,” (NuHealth.net).

President/CEO of the NuHealth System, Arthur A. Gianelli, is very proud of improving their commitment to excellence for the care and well-being of their patients. He recognizes how the medical center continues to exceed clinical benchmarks and guidelines and said, “This is a big win for the NuHealth Family – for our bariatric surgery center and for our patients. Earning the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to bariatric surgery patients,” (NuHealth.net).

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) is the largest organization for bariatric surgeons in the world. As a non-profit organization, it works to advance the “art and science of bariatric surgery and is committed to educating medical professionals and the public about bariatric surgery as an option for the treatment of morbid obesity, as well as the associated risks and benefits,” (ASMBS.org). In addition, ASMBS encourages its members to “investigate and discover new advances in bariatric surgery, while maintaining a steady exchange of experiences and ideas that may lead to improved surgical outcomes for morbidly obese patients.”

The Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) is dedicated to advancing the safety, efficacy and efficiency of surgical care worldwide. The organization manages programs on “behalf of top medical societies around the world setting a global standard for excellence,” (SurgicalReview.org).
