VON TAUBER TRUST HELPED LAUNCH VON TAUBER INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL PSYCHIATRY AND ENDOWED NUMC’S PSYCHIATRY AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT WITH SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES TO STUDY GLOBALIZATION AND PHYSICIAN MIGRANT EXPERIENCE IN U.S. AND ABROAD
GOAL OF DELIVERING SENSITIVE AND CULTURALLY COMPETENT CARE TO LONG ISLAND’S MULTI ETHNIC PATIENT POPULATION
East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that Nyapati R. Rao, MD, MS, chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Nassau University Medical Center has been named the Von Tauber chair of psychiatry at NUMC.
The Nassau Health Care Foundation, the medical, education and research foundation for the NuHealth System, received approximately $350,000 in a 2006 bequest from Dr. Robert Von Tauber and Olga Von Tauber, MD, revocable trust, exclusively to be used to enhance the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at NUMC in their memory.
“We are pleased that Dr. Rao has been named the Von Tauber chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at NUMC where he will help to establish and initiate activities of the Von Tauber Institute for the Study of Global Psychiatry, helping to embrace and understand the internationalization of the American psychiatric profession,” stated Gianelli. “Dr. Rao’s commitment to scholarly research and his unwavering interest in recruiting, retaining and enhancing culturally and linguistically competent mental health professionals, makes him the ideal leader to further deliver effective and comprehensive care to the diverse Long Island population in the public mental health setting.”
The funds will provide for a research and grants manager for the Von Tauber Institute for the study of psychiatry as a global profession, help sponsor an annual conference on global psychiatry, as well as ensuring that the chairmanship for the psychiatry department is named the Von Tauber chair of psychiatry.
“Under Dr Rao’s leadership, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health has attained regional and national recognition for patient care and scholarly activity.  The honor of being named the initial Von Tauber chair is richly deserved,” said Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice present for medical affairs and medical director.
Dr. Rao indicated that he was honored to have been named NUMC’s Von Tauber chair of psychiatry: “I am humbled by this honor and look forward to continue improving our psychiatry programs, memorialized through the generosity of Dr. Robert Von Tauber and Olga Von Tauber, MD. Their bequest will help to bring new ideas and practices and help to further improve the care for Long Island’s growing culturally diverse population, ensuring that access to and quality of treatment for ethnic minorities is enhanced, as well as improving the education and training of multicultural medical professionals, focusing primarily on psychiatry.
Dr. Rao came to NUMC from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he was Director of Psychiatric Residency Training and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry. After graduating from Kurnool Medical College in India, Dr. Rao completed his residency training in psychiatry at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center and obtained a Masters of Science from the Robert Wagner School of Public Service at New York University.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with added qualifications in geriatric psychiatry. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, and the American College of Psychiatrists.  Dr. Rao currently resides in Massapequa.
ABOUT THE VON TAUBER INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL PSYCHIATRY
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) is very proud to sponsor the Von Tauber Institute for Global Psychiatry (the Institute), with its origins in a generous bequest to the NUMC Department of Psychiatry from Long Island psychiatrist Dr. Olga Von Tauber and her husband Dr. Robert Von Tauber. The Institute's vision is to realize the best intentions behind the Von Tauber's bequest by studying the phenomenon of globalization and its various manifestations with the goal of delivering sensitive and culturally competent care to Long Island's multiethnic patient population. In addition, by examining the physician migrant experience in the United States and abroad, the Institute proposes to highlight issues faced by international medical graduates in the United States. The purpose of such an undertaking is to create more effective training models for them and to offer informed perspectives in the physician workforce debate in the United States. Finally, the Institute intends to create a scholarly atmosphere in the NUMC Department of Psychiatry that fosters faculty development and results in enhanced quality of care.

As the first woman director of a State Hospital in New York, Dr. Olga Von Tauber was a pioneer for progressive values in psychiatry. By using her bequest to establish the Institute, we are supporting the behavioral resilience of the people of the Long Island communities she long served and cared for, while also creating a lasting memorial to her exemplary values and work.
